Course Summary

Continuation of the independent stage. The aim is to enable students to deal with most situations likely to arise when travelling, studying or living in Sweden. By the end of the course, students should be fairly confident in talking about themselves, their work life and family but also be able to express their personal opinions and comments regarding everyday life. Students will move on to more complex grammar and learn more about Swedish culture and society.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Students considering joining this course should have completed Swedish 3.4 or otherwise acquired a similar level of proficiency (B1.2 according to CEFR).

Content of Course

  • reading and discussing a short novel (read over the whole term)
  • Networking, socialising and how to apply for a job
  • Close and extended family
  • The Vikings and their culture and beliefs
  • Swedish working life and codes of conduct

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening. The lessons will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context. Extensive written exercises and reading texts are set as homework where appropriate.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, and social events etc.
  • Produce simple connected texts on topics which are familiar or of personal or/and professional interest
  • Describe experiences and events, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
  • Understand the use of emphatic word order, commonly Swedish expressions and Swedish codes of conduct at home and in the work place
  • Have a fair understanding of Swedish culture, history and media
