Course Summary

Start of the independent stage. Students will move on to more complex grammar. The aim is to enable students to deal with most situations likely to arise when travelling in an area where Spanish is spoken. By the end of the course, students should be fairly confident in talking about past experiences, telling tales and jokes, talking about wishes and future plans, etc.

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Students should have completed Spanish 3 Course 1 or otherwise acquired a similar level of proficiency.

Content of Course

  • Prohibitions and regulations, tales, past civilisations, entertainment
  • Expressing prohibitions, comparing customs and lifestyles
  • Talking about cinema and television
  • Speaking about Spanish and Latin-American stereotypes
  • The past tenses, impersonal sentences, combination of pronouns,
  • Reading and discussing cultural texts and newspaper articles in Spanish
  • Listening to TV news from Spanish-speaking countries

Teaching method(s)

The course is tutorial based with a combination of whole class activity and group work; use of audio-visual material as teaching aids (audiotapes, CDs, videos and DVDs).
In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • Produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
  • Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
