Course Summary

DNA Profiling (sometimes called DNA fingerprinting) is a powerful identification tool. In this laboratory-based workshop, you will run DNA profiles on sheep DNA – and use the resulting profiles to solve a mystery!

Please note, this course takes place at the Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre. On arrival, please report to the reception desk in the Centre Building (next to the Roslin Institute) where you will be signed in.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

No previous knowledge or laboratory experience is required.

Content of Course

This workshop will allow you the chance to use the state-of-the-art laboratory at the Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre (EBSOC). The EBSOC team will guide you through activities designed to help you gain an understanding of DNA profiling using gel electrophoresis. The session will close with a discussion involving researchers from The Roslin Institute.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course the student will be able:

  • Explain how restriction enzymes cut DNA;

  • Interpret and discuss experimental results.
