Course Summary

For absolute beginners. The students will be introduced to the Swahili language. They will begin by learning how to greet people and introduce themselves and others. While learning the basics of Swahili pronunciation and grammar, they will learn how to talk about their families, daily routines, telling the time and talking about food and drink. There will be a variety of classroom activities covering speaking, listening, reading and writing. The pace of the class should suit all abilities, enabling students to familiarise themselves with the Swahili language.

Introducing yourself.
Shopping, talking about prices.
Daily routines, time.

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening. The lessons will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context. Extensive written exercises and reading texts are set as homework where appropriate.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type;
Introduce him/herself and others, and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has;
Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
