Course Summary

This course is for absolute beginners. Students will take the first steps to communicate in modern Russian and to understand Russian people. They will learn the Russian alphabet, read and write from the very start.

No previous knowledge required.

Content of Course

  • Introduction:
  • Russian alphabet, pronunciation and reading rules.
  • Reading practice of short texts and dialogues.
  • Introductory listening, comprehension, speaking.
  • Topics:
  • Greetings
  • At the Airport (passport control, baggage claim, customs, public transport)
  • The Street (asking for and giving directions, reading signs in the street)
  • Family and Friends (family members, using Russian names, introducing people, talking about Russian towns, numbers 1-10)
  • Grammar:
  • The gender of Russian nouns. Personal and possessive pronouns
  • Formation of nouns: names of professions, jobs. Complex sentence. The verb ‘to know’
  • Russian adjectives. Simple sentence
  • Complex sentence with the verb ‘to think’.
  • Present tense of the verb ‘to be’

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening. The lessons will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context. Extensive written exercises and reading texts are set as homework where appropriate.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Introduce him/herself and others, and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
  • Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
