Linocut. Take a floor covering and transform it into a framed art work. Learn to cut and control lino, roll on the ink and produce the big reveal!

No previous knowledge required.

Special Information

Essential materials you will need to bring to the first class:

· An apron or old shirt

 

Materials and equipment provided for students as part of the course and included in course fee:

· Printing Press, Printing inks, linocutting tools. Cutting knives. Lino TBC

 

Materials and equipment available for purchase during the course: 

· N/A

 

Essentials materials and equipment students will need to provide themselves:

· Sketchbook or other visual reference materials

· Glue stick

· HB/B Pencil

Additional recommended materials and equipment students can provide:

· Collage paper

. Colour papers for printing

· Permanent marker

Content of Course

Students will be introduced to a selection of relevant artists’ works in the medium of Relief printmaking. This will include works in linocut and woodcut.

Students will learn how to cut a piece of linoleum using relief cutting tools to create a printed image.

Students will learn how to apply printing ink with a roller to produce a selection of their own printed images on paper using expressive relief cutting techniques.

Teaching method(s)

Teaching will be based in the COL Art and Design Short Courses G9/G10 studios at Thomson’s Land

1. The tutor will give a brief slide presentation showing relevant examples of Relief prints by a selection of Artists

2. The tutor will demonstrate how to create an image into lino using a small selection of cutting tools. 3. The tutor will demonstrate the correct application of printing ink onto an image using a roller.

4. The tutor will demonstrate how to “pull” a print using paper and a printing press.

5. Students will then proceed to produce their own linocut prints under supervision by the tutor.

6. Students will be able to take their prints home with them at the end of the Taster.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this taster course, students should be able to:

Use a selection of cutting tools, inks and printing machinery confidently to produce a selection of their own images in print using a simple Relief printmaking technique in a Print Studio.
