Course Summary

This two-hour workshop will focus on altering the look, feel and substance of an existing published book. Through creative deconstruction of an existing text or structure, students will make a re-imagined work.

Pre-requisites for enrolment

No previous experience needed

Special Information

Materials and equipment provided for students as part of the course and included in course fee:

Scissors

Masking tape

Bonefolders

Newsprint

PVA glue

Acrylic paints

Drawing ink

Printing ink

Rollers

Brushes

Essentials materials and equipment students will need to provide themselves:

Pencils (HB, 2B or 4B)

Eraser

Putty rubber

Ruler

Scalpel/Stanley knife

Additional recommended materials and equipment:

Pritt stick

Scissors

Brushes for painting and gluing

Content of Course

This course will introduce students to:

  • the concept of the altered book and the work of artists who alter books in their practice e.g. Tom Phillips, Georgia Russell and J Safran Foer                                                                                                 
  • different approaches to altering an existing book through demonstrations.

Teaching method(s)

This two hour group workshop will introduce techniques, processes and concepts to enable students to alter an existing book into a more focused and personal exploration.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • respond to an existing text/book and consider different approaches to altering the content or structure within the context of the altered book;
  • explore the  different possibilities  offered by the deconstruction of a book form;
  • develop one altered book through an immediate response to an existing text.
