What is an orchestra? Want to know your brass from your woodwind? Join us to explore the families of orchestral instruments, discover how they are played and learn more about their historic contribution to orchestral music.
No previous knowledge of the subject is assumed.
This session will offer an overview of the instruments in a modern orchestra, and discuss the way in which orchestras have developed from C17th to present day. We shall discover how sound is produced in different instruments, and listen to some examples of key orchestral works.
Illustrated lecture and guided group discussion.
By the end of this taster course, students should be able to:
Identify key instruments of the modern orchestra.
Demonstrate an awareness of how the orchestra has developed.
Will be provided on the day.
