Course Summary

This course will take students on a musical tour of the major cities of Europe. We shall use five different cities to explore classical music from its beginnings to modern day, learning about works written by both resident and visiting composers. We shall also discover iconic buildings and world-class orchestras, conductors and soloists.

The course will be taught in lecture format, with recordings / videos and discussion.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Discuss musical works in their social, historical and cultural contexts;

  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of the history of European classical music;

  • Show appreciation for a variety of classical musical styles and genres.
