Crotchets, quavers, staves, clefs - confused? You needn't be - this one-day workshop will lead you through all the basics of writing music down on paper, and turning written signs back into sounds. Learn to read notes as easily as you can read this.
1. Notes I: lines and spaces, clefs, intervals.
2. Notes II: accidentals, key signatures: scales, chords, harmony.
3. Rhythm I – semibreves, minims, crotchets, quavers.
4. Rhythm II - bars, time signatures, counterpoint, dynamics. Tempo/expression marks.
Workshop / discussion with audio-visual material. Discussion and written work.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Write simple melodies in musical notation;
Read musical pitches and durations.
Handouts will be given on the day.
