An introduction to the drama, wit and sublime beauty of Mozart's operas.
No previous knowledge required.
1. Early operas.
2. Idomeneo and The Abduction from the Seraglio.
3. The Marriage of Figaro.
4. Don Giovanni.
5. Cosi Fan Tutte.
6. The Magic Flute and La Clemenza de Tito.
Non-technical discussion and CD excerpts. Ron Butlin is a former Edinburgh Poet-Laureate who loves sharing his enthusiasm for music. He frequently provides libretti for opera and texts for song cycles, chamber and orchestral music (Scottish Opera, BBC Symphony, SCO, EQ etc.).
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Identify key features of operas composed by Mozart;
Show greater understanding and enjoyment of opera;
Show awareness of the social, political and cultural contexts in which the operas were written.
