Teaching method(s)

Non-technical discussion and CD excerpts. Ron Butlin is a former Edinburgh Poet-Laureate who loves sharing his enthusiasm for music. He frequently provides libretti for opera and texts for song cycles, chamber and orchestral music (Scottish Opera, BBC Symphony, SCO, EQ etc.).

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Identify key features of operas composed by Mozart;
  • show greater understanding and enjoyment of opera;
  • Show awareness of the social, political and cultural contexts in which the operas were written
