Course Summary

Over three days, this course will guide students through the plays and performances on offer at Edinburgh’s Fringe and International festivals. This course will focus on three major productions, consider their wider historical and cultural contexts, and construct analytical responses to the texts and performances. Tickets for these three productions will be arranged for you but are not included in the course fee and so will come at an additional cost. Details of the performances and ticket arrangements will be provided in advance.

Please note, this course includes field trips (theatre visits).

Content of Course

Day 1

1. Morning: Session on the history of the Festival, notable past performances, introduction to modern Scottish drama.

2. Afternoon: Pre-show discussion, preparation for first theatre visit and discussion / recommendation of other upcoming Festival and Fringe highlights.

3. Evening: Theatre visit.

Day 2

1. Morning: Post-show discussion, preparation for second theatre visit and discussion/recommendation of other upcoming Festival and Fringe highlights

2. Afternoon / evening: Theatre visit.

Day 3

1. Morning: Post-show discussion, preparation for third theatre visit.

2. Afternoon / evening: Theatre visit.

Teaching method(s)

Combination of mini-lecture, guided discussion and theatre visits.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the historical and cultural context of the Edinburgh Festival;

  • Apply techniques of literary analysis to the works chosen;

  • Evaluate the success of each production as theatrical performance using recognised literary terminology.
