The novella might be the ideal form to explore a topic without stretching it to the narrative sprawl of the novel. It can offer a fearsome triviality where great themes can come out of minimal narrative exploration.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Discuss the history of the modern novella;
Explain the many ways in which it differs from the short story form, both modern and classical;
Offer a broader perspective on the novella form.
