Course Summary

The course is aimed mainly at people with intermediate Japanese language skills who wish to take the JLPT N4 test. The preparation course will provide the only opportunity in Scotland and the North of the UK for learners to prepare their JLPT skills in a face-to-face classroom environment.

The course will equip students with the specific knowledge and techniques required for the JLPT exam. Through the preparation course, students will be able to assess their own strengths and weaknesses in relevant areas, and to share their experience in Japanese language learning with fellow learners.

The course is organised in collaboration with the JLPT Edinburgh Test Centre hosted by University of Edinburgh.

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Students need to have intermediate Japanese in order to join the course. It is desirable that they have passed JLPT N5 level.

Content of Course

Teaching specific knowledge and techniques relevant for the N4 test, the prep course will offer an opportunity to revise and consolidate the language skills of both JLPT candidates and COL’s own students with intermediate level Japanese skills who wish to take JLPT. In particular, each individual class will focus on one of the skills tested in the JLPT – vocabulary and Kanji, grammar, listening and reading.

Teaching method(s)

Students will be given the opportunity to assess their strengths and weaknesses through tackling past papers at the beginning of the course, and will be able to assess their progress by taking a mock exam at the end of the course. On the basis of the course books students will revise and consolidate all language skills required for the N4 test. Class time is 12 hours in total (2 hours per week, over 6 weeks).

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course students will:

  • have developed their language skills in preparation for the JLPT N4 test (vocabulary, kanji character, grammar, listening and reading)

  • understand relevant exam techniques

  • have improved their accuracy in Japanese in all core areas

  • be able to monitor and assess their own language skills
