This course aims to revise grammar and improve the speaking and listening skills of students with elementary level of Japanese language. The course places great emphasis on social and cultural aspects of life in Japan. As such, you will have the opportunity to increase their fluency while revising grammatical structures of the language and expanding your vocabulary knowledge in various activities that involve speaking and listening under realistic social situations.
Japanese Elementary 6, JLPT N5-4, or equivalent.
Shopping which involves price/condition comparison.
Planning your travel in Japan, and expressing your needs.
Telling your thoughts to others and conveying message.
Discussing what you can do, or have done in the past.
Giving advice to other people.
Stating the reason why you must do something.
The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening. The lessons will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.
The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context.
In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.
By the end of the course students should be able to:
Make comparison before deciding;
Express your desire, needs and plans;
Talk about seasonal changes;
Conveying message from other people;
Talk about experience ‘ta kotoga arimasu’;
Discuss plans using conditional and potential forms;
Express necessity using the double negative phrase ‘nakereba narimasen’.
Handouts will be provided and there is no need to purchase a textbook.
