Course Summary

This course is for someone who wishes to continue to learn Japanese beyond post-beginners level. The course will cover all aspects of language learning - speaking, listening, reading, writing, communication and sociocultural knowledge. The topics to be covered are: giving complements, expressing gratitude, making comments, invitations, offering some help. Students will continue to study reading and writing Hiragana and Katakana.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Japanese 1.3 or equivalent.

Content of Course

  • Giving presents and complements: verbs ‘agemasu’, ‘kuremasu’, ‘moraimasu’
  • Adjectives: -i adj., -na adj. (past affirmative, past negative)
  • Asking for opinion: ‘do deshitaka’
  • Making comments: using the adverbs of degree ‘totemo’, ‘sugoku’, ‘sukoshi’, ‘chotto’; ‘amari’, ‘zenzen’
  • Invitations: the information on an event ‘-de –ga arimasu’, verb forms ‘-masenka’, ‘-mashou’, acceptance/refusal, vocabulary for events & activities
  • Making suggestions: verb form ‘-mashouka’
  • Offering some help: verb forms, acceptance/refusal
  • Consolidating Hiragana & Katakana reading and writing

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening. The lessons  will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context. Extensive written exercises and reading texts are normally only set as homework.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote 1-2 hours outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type
  • Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared
  • Read and write simple texts on familiar topics in Hiragana, Katakana
