Course Summary

This course is for someone who wishes to continue to learn Japanese at a higher level. The course will cover all aspects of language learning - speaking, listening, reading, writing, communication and socio-cultural knowledge. In order to develop communication skills, grammatical structures and new vocabulary will be introduced. In addition more Kanji will be covered during the course.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Japanese 3.1 or JLPT level 4 or equivalent.

Content of Course

  • Describing appearance and impressions

  • Talking about trends and common sights

  • Talking about recent changes in your life; asking and giving opinions; expressing emotion and feeling

  • Reading graphs/data and analysing them

  • Explaining how to use facilities; interviewing people

  • Expressing causes or reason: -tame;

  • describing change: -youni naru; nominalising sentences: -koto

  • Indicating means:-te, -de, -naide, -zuni

  • Describing deliberate actions : -tearu

  • Expressing purposes: -you

  • Reading & Writing more Kanji

 

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening. The lessons  will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context. Extensive written exercises and reading texts are normally only set as homework.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote 1-2 hours outwith classes to revision and homework.


 

Learning outcomes

Connect phrases in a simple way in order to give opinions, reasons and purpose

Give brief reasons and explanations for opinions and plans

Deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken

Enter unprepared into a conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events)

Understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.

Understand the main point of many radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear

Understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language in Kana and Kanji

Understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters in Kana and basic Kanji

Write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest in Kana and basic Kanji

Write personal letters describing experiences and impressions in Kana and basic Kanji
