A one-day course on the Darien Scheme: a bold colonial project to give Scotland mastery over trade crossing between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The course explores the background to the scheme; its failure, leading to financial ruin for many Scots; and the later impact on Scotland, including discussion of the union of 1707.
There will be a break between 13:00 and 14:00.
1. God and Mammon: Scotland at the end of the seventeenth century.
2. A global perspective: the growth of world trade and overseas empires.
3. The Darien Scheme is hatched: the Company of Scotland and the vision of William Paterson.
4. The Darien Scheme unfolds: the expeditions to Panama and the failure of the project.
5. Aftermath: the road to the Act of Union.
Lecture and facilitated discussion.
