Course Summary

This level continues to develop the skills of understanding and speaking Hindi. It introduces the languages for everyday purposes such as asking for and giving simple information, buying clothes, etc. To provide a framework for such communication it introduces basic grammatical structures. We will begin to introduce the Hindi writing system but will also keep using transliteration.

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Students should have completed Hindi 1.1 or equivalent.

Content of Course

  • The Hindi alphabet system
  • Reading Hindi Script: Devanagari
  • Shopping and talking about prices
  • Finding your way in a city, asking for directions
  • Daily routine, construction of simplest present and present continuous sentences
  • Likes and dislikes
  • Counting and telling time

Teaching method(s)

The course is tutorial based with a combination of whole class activity and pair/group work; use of audio-visual material as teaching aids (ICTs, audiotapes, CDs, videos and DVDs).
In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote some time outwith classes to do revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on familiar topics
  • Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
  • Recognise and read the Hindi script: Devanagari
