Course Summary

Continuation of the basic stage. Students will continue to learn the basics of French grammar: verbs, prepositions, sentence structure, etc. By the end of the course, students should be confident in describing how they feel, giving personal information, talking about their interests, house, family, etc.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Students should have completed French 1.3 or otherwise acquired a similar level of proficiency.

Content of Course

  • Family and relations; biographies and lifestyles; describing feelings and people
  • Travelling in French speaking countries; talking about leisure and cultural activities; climate and weather; describing places
  • Cultural aspects of life in France e g: famous French and French speaking people
  • Revision of present and past tenses (passé composé, imparfait); pronouns and prepositions; present conditional; comparatives and superlatives

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening. The lessons  will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context.  Extensive written exercises and reading texts are normally only set as homework.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type such as participating at family events
  • Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters
  • Describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need
