Course Summary

This level begins to develop the skills of understanding and speaking Dutch. It introduces the language for everyday purposes such as introducing oneself, greeting people, asking for and giving simple information, etc. To provide a framework for such communication it introduces basic grammatical structures.

Content of Course

  • Topic : directions, transport ; making a suggestion, making an appointment, booking ; shopping, clothes, colours - Grammar : independent use of the adjective (eg. iets leuks), ordinals, personal pronouns (subject and object), conjunctions
  • Topic : family ties, describing somebody physically ; congratulating someone, emotions, Dutch holidays ; describing someone’s character - Grammar : possessive pronouns, pronouns, the 3 functions of ‘je’, er/daar, future, separable verbs, word order after a separable verb, diminutive.
  • Topic : body parts, pains and diseases ; at the doctor’s and at the chemist’s, asking for and giving advice, reading brochures – Grammar : reflexive verbs and pronouns, past tense perfectum (regular and irregular verbs), giving advice with zou(den), separable verbs
  • Topic : at the town hall, making a statement, asking for and renewing a passport or driving licence ; looking for and applying for a job ; asking for information about a trip – Grammar : pointing at object, liggen, staan, zitten with objects, participles of separable verbs, zo/zo’n, indirect speech, prepositional verbs.

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening. The lessons will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context. Extensive written exercises and reading texts are set as homework where appropriate.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type, such as asking for directions and information, asking about opinions or films.
  • Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help;
  • Use compound verbs;
  • Begin to use the past tense.
