This course is aimed at those looking to try on-site, plein-air drawings and paintings along the Firth of Forth coastline. Focusing on one or two locations, this course will allow you to develop a series of drawings and paintings based on the ever-changing environmental conditions and landscape.
As it's a 2.5 day course the first day morning is in the studio, and the tutor will be able to give out information regarding the location before visiting the sites.
Please note, this course takes place on coastal locations and transport is not provided. The locations will be accessible by public transport but there may be a bit of walking involved to various view points throughout the day. Students need to make their own way to the location.
No previous knowledge of the subject is required.

Cartridge paper
Essential materials and equipment students must provide themselves:
Sketchbook
Paints (Oils, Acrylics or Watercolours)
A range of appropriate brushes (to the relevant painting medium)
Painting surfaces
Board to rest upon
Water pot
Rags
Palette
Palette knife
Pencils
Warm clothing
Camera
Each session, students will be introduced to various aspects in relation to the course. The sessions will explore a combination of contextual references and feature practical exercises and demonstrations, which include:
1. Working on location and with varying subject matter.
2. Exploring aspects of movement and light, dealing with changing weather and lighting conditions.
3. Exploring developing drawing and painting studies directly, in real time.
4. Explore working with a range of materials and painting media.
5. Utilise the sketchbook to make preliminary studies and thumbnail sketches consider formats and compositions.
This course will be based and delivered on location and will typically include a range of practical exercises and introductions to techniques, processes and concepts. This is supported by practical demonstrations, group discussions, contextual references and one-to-one support.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Develop a series of works that demonstrate a response to a changing environment.
Demonstrate an awareness for making a series of direct observations from one location.
Demonstrate a range of drawing and painting approaches to capture a sense of movement and light.
