Course Summary

Looking at the work of the German Expressionists, students will be guided through a range of dynamic painting techniques that influenced much of 20th century and contemporary art and will take this to the streets of  a busy Edinburgh during the festival where location drawing will be transformed in the studio into prints and paintings.

Pre-requisites for enrolment

No previous knowledge is assumed.

Special Information

Essentials materials and equipment students will need to provide themselves:

  • Artist’s sketchbook

  • Pencils

  • Charcoal

  • Set of acrylic paints and brushes

  • Paper and card to paint on

  • Rags

  • Sponge

  • Block printing ink

Content of Course

Day 1

1. Introduction and how to use the sketchbook, then taking those skills into the field, working on location developing drawing studies in the old town of Edinburgh.

Day 2

2. Develop a range of studies and sketches with monotypes and prepare grounds base for the works from day 1.

Day 3

3. Produce a series of further studies and more considered paintings, bringing together the ideas and approaches explored in the first two days.

Teaching method(s)

Students will be taught through informed discussion, demonstration and one to one tuition. Students will initially be shown examples of work by major figures in the German Expressionist movement and techniques in use of composition, colour, line and tone discussed. Drawing techniques will be demonstrated prior to location drawing.  Demonstrations of mono printing, colour mixing and theory and mark making will be followed by one to one tuition.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Gather research using small sketches, employ a range of drawing and painting approaches.

  • Produce a series of drawing, prints and studies referring to examples of other artists work discussed and own sketchbook drawings.

  • Develop, resolve and complete a series of small paintings.
