Course Summary

Students will learn how to make paints with powdered pigment and egg yolk. They will look at traditional and contemporary ways of applying the paint to paper, as well as a demonstration of the technique on a gesso ground.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Some experience of painting in any medium preferred.

Special Information

Essential materials you will need to bring to the first class:

  • Fine sable type brushes

  • Apron

  • Flat priming brush

Additional recommended materials and equipment students can provide:

  • Images from sketchbooks or photos to use

  • Fine rubber gloves

Materials and equipment provided for students as part of the course and included in course fee:

  • Paper

  • Pigments

  • Egg

Content of Course

Teaching is delivered over an intensive period of two consecutive day sessions, each with six hours class contact time. Over the class sessions the course will cover:

Day 1

1. Looking at artists who use egg tempera, both historical and contemporary.

2. Discussion of pigments.

3. Demonstration of making egg tempera paints.

4. Experimentation with different ways of applying paint on paper.

Day 2

5. Demonstration of use of egg tempera on gesso panel.

6. Recipe for making gesso.

7. Students will work on a more finished egg tempera painting on paper.

Teaching method(s)

This course will be based and delivered in specialist art and design studios or workshops and will typically include a range of practical exercises, introductions to techniques, processes and concepts, and set projects which lead to more focused and personal exploration. Students’ progress will be monitored and supported by the tutor who will suggest follow up reading, research and practice to undertake each week to support their studies. Teaching will include practical demonstrations, one to one tuition, group discussions and critiques.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand more about the history of making paints and the various ways it is applied;

  • Experiment with different egg tempera techniques on paper;

  • Produce some finished pieces and experimental sheets.
