This course is the continuation of the previous course, Chinese 5.3, for intermediate/advanced students who already have strong foundations in learning Chinese. By the end of the course, students should be able to understand more advanced grammatical and lexical concepts, regular expressions, as well as more complex written and spoken language. Students will be able to communicate confidently and effectively. In addition, students will learn about Chinese culture and customs through both the textbook and documentaries shown in class. These represent the living and working conditions and attitudes of Chinese people today in an intuitive and vivid manner.
Students should have completed either Chinese 5.3 or equivalent.
The course is tutorial based with a combination of class activities and group work. Audio-visual material is used as teaching aids (CDs and DVDs). The videos are edited from the original documentaries broadcast by China Central Television. The videos will help students visually understand the living environment, conditions and the mindset of people living in China today.
By the end of the course students should:
Textbook: Wu Zhongwei. Ten Level Chinese (Intensive Reading). Vol. 6. Beijing: Beijing Language & Culture University - Electronic & Audiovisual Press, 2007.
