Course Summary

This course is the continuation of the previous course, Chinese 4.2, for intermediate students who have established a relatively strong foundation in learning Chinese. By the end of the course, students should be able to understand more grammatical and lexical concepts as well as sentence structures, enabling them to communicate more confidently and effectively in Mandarin Chinese. In addition, students will know more about changing social phenomena and the lives of contemporary Chinese people as well as gain a solid understanding of contemporary Chinese society and culture.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Students should have completed either Chinese 4.2 or equivalent.

Content of Course

  • Students will learn how to discuss the following topics:
  • Chinese drinking at social occasions
  • Chinese ways of parenting
  • Chinese views on euthanasia
  • Different education concepts in the East and West.

Teaching method(s)

The course is tutorial based with a combination of joint class activity and group work. In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, students are expected to spend at least 2 hours on revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should:

  • be familiar with the rules of Chinese phrase-formation, such as prefix and suffix rules
  • have an expended knowledge of Chinese vocabulary
  • know more about Chinese understatement
  • understand more about contemporary Chinese society, especially the Chinese system of education
  • know more about the lives of Chinese people
  • communicate more freely in social activities

This course concludes the Chinese 4 studies. Students should have a good command of 487 Chinese words and expressions.
