A course designed for writers who have already completed The Art and Craft of Children’s Fiction 1, and/or for people with some experience of writing for children. The course asks students to focus on a project – such as the first chapters of a novel for children, and in-depth feedback will form part of the work.
Students on this course should have completed The Art and Craft of Children’s Fiction 1 and/or some previous experience of writing for children.
This course covers key aspects of children’s fiction with particular attention devoted to writing, editing and submitting for publication.
1. Writing craft – show and tell.
2. Writing craft – point of view. Whose story is it?
3. Writing craft – strong characters and strong motivation.
4. Writing craft – plot and levels of conflict.
5. Writing craft – action and dialogue.
6. Editing craft – the structural edit.
7. Editing craft – the line edit.
8. Editing craft – synopsis and blurb
9. Submitting craft – agents and publishers
10. Review of course and sharing the fruits of the term’s work.
Workshop based with some readings/lectures/sharing of writing.
