Course Summary

This course aims to develop fluency and consolidate further the knowledge of Spanish acquired in previous levels. It develops further the use of the language for everyday purposes, It also reinforces basic grammatical knowledge and vocabulary.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

This course is solely for students who began Spanish 1.1 in April 2017 or Beginning Spanish 1 in July or August 2017 and have progressed through Spanish Beginners 2 in September 2017 and Spanish Beginners 3 in January 2018. Upon completion of this course, you will be ready for Spanish Elementary 1.

Content of Course

  • Talking about one's professional life and career development.
  • Ways to express opinion and argue a point of view.
  • Handling phone calls.
  • Comparison: talking about equality and inequality
  • Periphrasis (estar a punto de + verbo, acabar de + verbo)
  • Usage of ya, todavía, todavía no.
  • Prepositions and relative clauses.
  • Present continuous, past tenses (pretérito perfecto and pretérito indefinido).
  • Expressing intention, plans and future events
  • Latin American and Spanish culture.
  • Reading and discussing a simple short story in Spanish

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening. The lessons  will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introuduced in context. More extensive written exercises and reading texts are normally only set as homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics.
  • Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
  • Understand short, simple stories and texts on familiar topics.
