Course Summary

Continuation of the independent stage. Students will continue to learn more complex grammar. The aim is to enable students to deal with most situations likely to arise when travelling in an area where Spanish is spoken. By the end of the course, students should be fairly confident in talking about past events, discussing literature, talking about the news, etc.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Students should have completed Spanish 3 Course 4 or otherwise acquired a similar level of proficiency.

Content of Course

  • Mysteries and enigmas, new forms of medicine, magic and religion, media
  • Expressing agreement and disagreement, presenting different hypothesis, discussing current news
  • Historical and cultural aspects of Spain and Latin America compared to other countries, e.g. Mexican Revolution, El Quijote
  • Expressing uncertainty and hypothesis (futuro simple and compuesto), past tenses, common acronyms, passive sentences
  • Reading and discussing cultural texts and newspaper articles in Spanish
  • Listening to TV news from Spanish-speaking countries

Teaching method(s)

The course is tutorial based with a combination of whole class activity and group work; use of audio-visual material as teaching aids (audiotapes, CDs, videos and DVDs).
In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Give brief reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
  • Enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events).
  • Understand the main point of many radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear.
  • Understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language.
