Content of Course

Students will be introduced to a selection of relevant works in the medium of early and contemporary Relief printmaking produced by a printing press. This will include works in woodcut and linocut which incorporate image with text.

Students will first choose from a selection of ready-made letter type blocks then learn how to cut a piece of linoleum using relief cutting tools to create an image. They will then combine the two, text with image, to produce a unique work using a printing press and hand stamping.

Students will learn how to apply printing ink with a roller to a relief image and letter type block

to produce a selection of their own printed images on paper.

Teaching method(s)

Teaching will be based in the COL Art and Design Short Courses G9/G10 studios at Thomson’s Land

1. The tutor will give a brief slide presentation showing relevant examples of Relief prints combining image and text. This will include early examples of printed illuminations and contemporary print works.

2. The tutor will demonstrate how to create an image into lino using a small selection of cutting tools. 3. The tutor will demonstrate the correct application of printing ink onto an image using a roller.

4. The tutor will demonstrate how to create a print using moveable type and image.

5. The tutor will “pull” a print which combines text with image using paper, a printing press and printing by hand.

5. Students will then proceed to produce their own prints under supervision by the tutor.

6. Students will be able to take their prints home with them at the end of the Taster.

Learning outcomes
