This course will be of interest to general music lovers who would like to increase their appreciation of the music of Mozart. His life and music will be explored through CD excerpts, lots of discussion and an optional visit to an Edinburgh International Festival performance of Don Giovanni (Festival Theatre) on Wednesday 09 August 2017 19:00.

Content of Course

Morning:

1. Mozart as an infant prodigy.

2. The rise of the sonata form Mozart in Salzburg.

3. Mozart’s struggles in Vienna.

Afternoon:

4. Mozart’s success in Vienna.

5. Mozart’s final years.

Teaching method(s)

The course will comprise tutor-led discussion, musical excerpts and group discussion.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of Mozart's work;

  • Analyse the various forms of his music;

  • Show an understanding of his music in its social and historic context;

  • Discuss his life and music.
