No previous experience of singing is required. There is no need to read music.
Students need to bring a bottle of water.
Each week, we shall explore the work of two or three musicians (including singers, songwriters and storytellers) and their songs. The tutor will deliver audiovisual presentations about each of the musicians / songs, and will then teach the songs by ear, in a relaxed and encouraging setting. In doing so, we shall build a repertoire of songs and discuss their place in the social history of Scotland.
The approach to music will be experiential as well as theoretical. Learning will be interactive and discussion encouraged. Melodies (and some harmonies) will be taught by ear and will not require an ability to read sheet music.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Examine, compare and contrast the lyrics, stories and characters within songs;
Analyse and articulate the historical, social, economic, political, emotional and moral dimensions of the songs;
Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the Scottish oral tradition and Scottish culture;
Sing a varied selection of Scottish songs.
