This course will present an informal history of western classical music by way of the lives and works of well-loved composers. The music will include the familiar and the unfamiliar, and will aim to explore the life and times of composers who remain regular concert favourites today. Lots of lively discussion and CD excerpts.
No previous knowledge is required.

3. Schumann
4. The Russians: Glinka to Shostakovich
Illustrated lecture and discussion.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Discuss the importance of major classical composers
Explain what makes classical music ‘special’;
Analyse the various forms of classical music;
Have an overview of the history of western music;
Learn about the lives of some major composers.
