This course examines operas performed in Scotland during season 17/18, principally by Scottish Opera and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. One or two weeks will be devoted to each opera.
No previous knowledge required.
Lecture based with class discussion.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Analyse critically the features which distinguish one opera from another, the work of one composer from another;
Understand the changing priorities of composers and audiences in the field of opera;
Be aware of the changing power relationships between opera impresarios, singers and composers;
Explain the aims and objectives of the composers represented.
