This course will explore the melody and lyrics of a selection of beautiful songs from around the world and discuss their origin and cultural context.
No previous experience of singing is required. There is no need to read music.
Students should bring a bottle of water.
Many of the songs will be in English and a few will be short, easy to learn songs in the language of their country of origin. Over 6 weeks we shall build a repertoire of songs from Europe, Africa, the Americas, Australasia and Asia, and consider their social and political significance
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Understand the lyrics and the story/characters within the songs;
Display an awareness of the historical, social, economic, political, emotional and moral dimensions of the songs;
Demonstrate a greater understanding of oral tradition and culture;
Enjoy singing a very varied selection of songs from around the world;
An understanding of the link between singing and health.
Handouts will be provided on the historical political or social setting of each song. The words will be handed out as large print song lyric sheets.
