Course Summary

Dark forests, icy lakes and snow-bound wilderness - all these natural elements feature in the instrumental music of Finland’s leading composer. Investigate why Sibelius still holds a special place in the heart of the music lover today.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

No previous knowledge is required.

Content of Course

1. Sibelius: a biographical and musical overview.

2. Early tone poems, symphonies 1 and 2, Violin Concerto.

3. The middle symphonies 3, 4 and 5; Luonnotar.

4. The last symphonies 6 and 7; Tapiola.

5. Music for strings, Theatre music, chamber music and songs.

Teaching method(s)

Teaching will be by lecture and seminar with participation encouraged.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the biographical, musical and stylistic main features of Sibelius;

  • Evaluate the principle parameters of the songs and piano music, concertos and chamber music of Sibelius.
