Why is middle C so important? What exactly are crotchets? Why can we harmonise just about everything with three chords? How does a musical score work? Find out the answer to these questions and other fundamental ideas in this exciting introductory course.

Content of Course

1. Basic notation: clefs, rhythms and staves.

2. Scales, intervals and keys.

3. Musical movement.

4. Basic harmony: primary triads and chord inversions.

5. Embellishing notes: rhythm in melody.

6. Writing musical phrases to words.

7. Some 2-part ideas.

8. Principles of form.

9. Instrumentation.

10. Composition.

Teaching method(s)

Teaching will be lecture / seminar / discussion CD/ vocal / instrumental support.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Comprehend basic music notation, both pitch and rhythm.

  • Notate their own compositions.

  • Demonstrate working understanding of basuc harmony.
