Working with precious and base metals, this course will introduce students to the skill of enamelling within jewellery and silversmithing, exploring the potential of enamel and colour. With tutor guidance on the process of research and design, this course will allow you to develop your own personal project using enamel.
No previous knowledge of the subject is required.
Materials you will need to bring to the first class:
Glasses if you need them for close up work
In addition to the course fee, students are expected to provide the following list of indicative tools, materials and equipment:
Research for personal projects
Apron (optional)
Sketchbook (optional)
Permanent marker pen / pencil
Each session students will be introduced to various aspects of enamel and its uses in jewellery making. The sessions will explore a combination of contextual references and feature practical exercises and demonstrations, which include:
1. An introduction to tools and equipment.
2. An introduction to cold connections such as riveting.
3. An introduction to enamelling.
4. Experimental enamelling on roll printed and etched base and precious metals.
5. Combining cold connections with enamelled elements to create a piece/series of jewellery for your personal project.
6. Develop a personal jewellery project.
This course will be based and delivered in specialist art and design studios or workshops and is expected to include a range of practical exercises, tuition in technique, processes and concepts. This is supported by practical demonstrations, group discussions, contextual references and one-to-one support.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Translate an idea into a piece of jewellery design.
Demonstrate an understanding of basic jewellery techniques, enamelling and riveting to create a piece of work.
Demonstrate a creative understanding of enamel and its use within jewellery design.
