Introduction to Etching within Jewellery Design

Pre-requisites for enrolment

No previous knowledge of the subject is required.

Special Information

Materials you will need to bring to the first class:

• Glasses if you need them for close up work

• Black fine permanent marker pen

In addition to the course fee, students are expected to provide the following list of indicative tools, materials and equipment:

• Research for personal projects

• Apron

• Sketchbook (optional)

• Permanent marker pen / pencil

Content of Course

Each session students will be introduced to various aspects of etching and its uses in jewellery making. The sessions will explore a combination of contextual references and feature practical exercises and demonstrations, which include:

1. An introduction to tools and equipment.

2. An experimental workshop in texturing and surface pattern using hammers, roll printing and oxidisation.

3. An introduction to etching techniques on base and precious sheet metal.

4. Using the etching tank and etching resists.

5. A short sheet metal ring and bangle project.

6. Using combined techniques for a personal project.

Teaching method(s)

This course will be based and delivered in specialist art and design studios or workshops and is expected to include a range of practical exercises, tuition in technique, processes and concepts. This is supported by practical demonstrations, group discussions, contextual references and one-to-one support.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

• Translate an idea a piece of jewellery design.

• Demonstrate an understanding of basic jewellery and etching techniques to create a piece of work.

• Demonstrate a creative understanding of etching within jewellery design.
