Course Summary

This course for students with an elementary knowledge of Italian aims to improve their knowledge of the language using a communicative approach that combines input and interaction. The course consists of ten hours - four classes of two and a half hours – and it will give the students the opportunity to consolidate their knowledge of Italian grammar and vocabulary and develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

The course will run for four weeks with one class of 2.5 hours per week and the course materials are included. This course aims to improve the speaking and listening skills of students with an elementary knowledge of Italian. Students will have the opportunity to increase their fluency while revising the basic grammar structures of the language and expanding their vocabulary knowledge. The course places emphasis on social and cultural aspects of life in Italy.

Course Details

Pre-requisites for enrolment

Students need to be familiar with basic vocabulary and structures like the present tense and have some knowledge of the past tense (passato prossimo).

Content of Course

Each class will consist of activities that develop speaking and listening as well as vocabulary and grammar needed to communicate.

  • Daily life and daily routines, talking about  the past.

  • Travel experiences.

  • Organizing a holiday in Italy, the weather.

  • Revision and consolidation of present tense, past tense.

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is speaking and listening. The lessons will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, students will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type;

  • Introduce themselves and others, and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they knows and things they have;

  • Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
