Course Summary

This Beginners course for students with no prior knowledge of Italian aims to introduce students to the language using a communicative approach that combines input and interaction. The course consists of twenty hours - eight classes of two and a half hours – and it will give the students the opportunity to acquire a very basic knowledge of Italian grammar and vocabulary and develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Pre-requisites for enrolment

This course is for absolute beginners with no knowledge of the language.

Content of Course

Each class will consist of activities that develop speaking and listening as well as vocabulary and grammar needed to communicate.

* Greetings, formal/informal

* Exchanging personal information

* Time, days of the week, months

* Eating and drinking; expressing likes and dislikes

* Alphabet; numbers 

* Word order and sentence structure for questions and answers

* Articles 

* Pronouns

  * Verb endings in the present tense

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is speaking and listening. The lessons will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, students will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

* understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type;

* introduce themselves and others, and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they knows and things they have;

* interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
