Course Summary

Explore the history of Burke and Hare’s era in Edinburgh: the study of anatomy as part of Edinburgh’s internationally renowned medical teaching, the connections between crime and science at the time, and the investigation of Burke and his partner McDougal; Hare and his wife and Dr Robert Knox.

This course takes place at Surgeons' Hall Museums, Nicolson Street and includes time to visit the displays. Please meet at the museum entrance.

Pre-requisites for enrolment

No prior knowledge is required. 

Content of Course

  • Edinburgh in the time of Burke and Hare
  • Burke and Hare, the ‘other’ and crime.
  • Medical teaching in Edinburgh.
  • The trial of Burke and McDougal.

 Guided discussions of displays and visit to exhibits.

Teaching method(s)

Illustrated lecture, class discussion, visit to exhibits. 

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Discuss the social and economic context of medical study in early 19th-century Edinburgh.
  2. Analyse the actions of Burke, Hare and Knox, and the connection between science and crime in their context.

Evaluate the evidence in museum displays and assess how it contributes to our historical understanding.
