This course for students working towards an intermediate knowledge of French aims to improve their knowledge of the language using a communicative approach that combines input and interaction.
The course consists of ten hours - four classes of two and a half hours – and it will give the students the opportunity to consolidate their knowledge of French grammar and vocabulary and develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
The course will run for four weeks with one class of 2.5 hours per week and the course materials are included. This course aims to improve the speaking and listening skills of students working towards an intermediate knowledge of French. Students will have the opportunity to increase their fluency while revising the basic grammar structures of the language and expanding their vocabulary knowledge. The course places emphasis on social and cultural aspects of life in France.
Students should be familiar with basic vocabulary and grammar structures like the past tense (passé composé) and the imperfect tense.
Each class will consist of activities that develop speaking and listening as well as vocabulary and grammar needed to communicate.
Travelling around France, regional differences: food and geography
Cultural aspects of life in France, e.g. historical/cultural hot spots
Taking about past experiences, telling a story
Revision of past tenses (passé composé et imparfait), conditional, prepositions & pronouns, comparison
The emphasis in this course is speaking and listening. The lessons will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.
The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context.
In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, students will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.
On completion of this course, students will be able to:
Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters.
Produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
Describe experiences and events, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
Handouts will be provided and there is no need to purchase a textbook.
Where appropriate web sources will be provided by tutor.
