Course Summary

The history of cinema is often a history of re-discovery. Many films now held as classics were neglected for years by critics and audiences. Sometimes they were too obscure or daring, or they seemed out of fashion. Come and explore some forgotten gems that will amaze you by their modernity!

Teaching method(s)

Classes are 3 hour long with complete screenings of the films, an introductory lecture and a post-screening discussion.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the continuity and disjunctions in the evolution of cinema as an art form;

  • Identify and discuss various directorial styles, camera work and narrative techniques;

  • Appreciate how changes in society have influenced production, distribution and reception of films.
