With a new line-up of films every year, this course offers an exciting overview of one of the world’s most important national cinemas. We will explore a variety of genres and styles (dramas, comedies, westerns and more) while discussing the work of both canonical and lesser known figures in Italian cinema.
No previous knowledge is assumed.
Each teaching session involves a three-hour class which includes a tutor introduction, a full film screening and a tutor-led post-film discussion with student involvement.

3. I compagni (Mario Monicelli, 1963).
4. I giorni dell'ira (Tonino Valerii, 1967).
5. Il profumo della signora in nero (Francesco Barilli, 1974).
6. Il deserto dei Tartari (Valerio Zurlini, 1976).
7. Tre fratelli (Francesco Rosi, 1981).
8. La voce della luna (Federico Fellini, 1990).
9. Signorinaeffe (Wilma Labate, 2007).
10. Mia madre (Nanni Moretti, 2015).
3 hour classes with full screenings, tutor introduction and tutor-led post-film discussion.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Understand the development of Italian cinema across more than a century;
Identify and explain the formal and thematic traits of key movements such as neorealism and key auteurs;
Discuss some key theoretical issues concerning Italian film.
