Course Summary

Students will continue to learn more complex vocabulary and grammar and the classes will be conducted almost entirely in Dutch. Students will be prepared to manage more complex and unexpected situations. By the end of the course students should be fairly confident in talking about past experiences and about feelings and ideas as well as discussing current affairs and being up-to-date with social currents in the Netherlands.

Content of Course

  • Revision and consolidation of grammar from previous courses.
  • Discussion of ideas based on increasingly complex texts.
  • Cultural aspects of the Netherlands and the way society works.
  • Comparisons of Dutch culture and other cultures.
  • Acquisition of more complex and specialist vocabulary.
  • Broadening out of knowledge of grammar acquired at an earlier stage.
  • Conjunctions, passive sentences, relative pronouns, irregular verbs in various tenses, the conditional, the use of ‘ER’ and separable verbs.

Teaching method(s)

The emphasis in this course is on speaking and listening. The lessons will focus on language that is required for communicating in real situations.

The lessons will include whole class activities and pair or small group work, role-play, watching videos and listening to CDs. Grammar is introduced in context. Extensive written exercises and reading texts are set as homework where appropriate.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, you will need to devote some time outwith classes to revision and homework.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Understand the main points of clear standard input of familiar matters regularly encountered in everyday situations.
  • Produces simple connected texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
  • Describe experiences and events, ideas and emotions and be able to justify opinions and views.
