Creating Images (Online) (10 credit points)

Course Summary

This course will enable students to investigate the process by which artists find their subjects and how they invent original images. Students will learn to develop subjects or themes for drawing, painting, print and illustration by recording, collecting, editing and manipulating images and compositions. Students will be taken through an intense series of developed drawing, painting and mixed media techniques, gaining practical insight into how artists ‘discover’ their visual ideas to create a portfolio of compositional studies suitable for further study.

Short 1:1 sessions with the tutor will be offered to students once a week within the times outlined below:
Thursday 11.30am-12.30pm and 3.15-4.30pm

Course will be delivered via Blackboard Collaborate and Learn.

Special Information

Materials you will need to bring to the first class:

  • Computer with internet access

  • A starter set of acrylic paints (to include: red, blue, yellow, white, black)

  • A range of hog hair or synthetic brushes –sizes approx. 2, 5 and 8

  • Old jars and tins

  • A craft knife or scissors

  • Masking tape

  • Kitchen towel

  • PVA glue, Pritt Stick

  • 1 sheets white Cartridge Paper size A1

  • An A4 or similar sized sketchbook (preferably hardback book)

  • An assortment of old magazine full of coloured photograph you can cut up.

  • Your own digital camera

In addition to the course fee, students are expected to provide the following list of indicative tools, materials and equipment:

  • Computer with internet access

  • A range of drawing materials - pencils, conté, charcoal, fibre pens etc

  • A range of dip, scratch or calligraphy pen nibs and holders

  • A putty rubber

  • Black drawing ink

  • A starter set of acrylic paints (to include: red, blue, yellow, white, black)

  • Black, white, and 3 other coloured tubes of Gouache paints

  • A range of hog hair or synthetic brushes - sizes approx. 2, 5 and 8

  • Old jars and tins

  • A craft knife and scissors

  • Masking tape

  • Kitchen towel

  • PVA glue, Pritt Stick

  • A range of white Cartridge Paper: A3 - A1 sizes

  • A range of card – various sizes

  • Tracing paper - any

  • An A4 or similar sized sketchbook (preferably hardback book)

  • Visual Reference: any collected visual research - photographs, magazines, drawings, sketches and studies from previous classes or own work

  • An assortment of collage material – papers, fabrics, wrappings, newspapers, etc.

Content of Course

1. Developing skills within a sketchbook for Introduction to composition, tone and colour.

2. Taking a collage for a walk as a means of creating compositions.

3. Making images from photographs which move beyond the photographic.

4. Using drawing is a tool for routine recording of observation.

5. Taking colour for a walk in a sketchbook.

6. Developing new images from the colour sketchbook.

7. Introduction to a range of relevant artists to inform practice.

8. Keep a log/blog during the period of the course to record learning, achievements and challenges.

9. Working on a focused project to create a coherent portfolio of studies and samples.

Teaching method(s)

Ideally you should have;
An up-to-date web browser (Google Chrome recommended) 
Microphone (ideally headset) and Webcam 
Strong Internet connection
 
Teaching will be fully online and will typically include a range of practical exercises, introductions to techniques, processes and concepts, and set projects which lead to more focused and personal exploration. Over the course, students’ progress will be monitored and supported by the tutor.  Teaching will include practical demonstrations, one to one tuition, group discussions and critiques.
 
For students taking a course for credit you will be required to undertaken work outwith the class, which your tutor will outline, including practical directed study activities and by keeping a reflective Learning Journal. Directed study will include developing further practical work alongside research into a range of suggested artists and their associated movements to engender a contextual awareness. Students are expected to demonstrate how their research has informed their work through annotated sketchbooks and reflections made within a digital learning journal. 

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Use a range of drawing strategies to routinely record, research and make visual enquiry through the use of the sketchbook.

  • Show resourcefulness and inventiveness in the use of materials and processes to create a range of visual studies and resolved image-based artworks.

  • Evidence independent judgment in the research, selection and editing of visual images.

Studying for Credit

If you choose to study for credit you will need to allocate significant time outwith classes for coursework and assessment preparation. Credit points gained from this course can count towards the Certificate of Higher Education.
