Introduction to Coastal Drawing and Painting (5-week version)

Course Summary

This course is aimed at those who wish to be introduced to creating on-site, plein-air drawings and paintings. Focusing on one or two locations, along the Firth of Forth coastline, this course will allow you to develop a series of drawings and paintings based on the ever-changing environmental conditions and landscape.

Please note, this course takes place on coastal locations and transport is not provided. Further information regarding the location for the first class shall be provided to you nearer the time.

No previous knowledge of the subject is required.

Special Information

Materials you will need to bring to the first class:

  • Along with confirmation about the location of the first class, which you will receive about 2 weeks before the course is due to commence, you will receive details about the materials you should bring

In addition to the course fee, students are expected to provide the following list of indicative tools, materials and equipment:

  • own transport to location

  • drawing board; approximate size A2

  • masking tape / bull dog clips to hold paper to board

  • ground sheet (also available from tutor)

  • foldable stool if you do not like sitting on the ground

  • some students like to work on an easel - this should be portable

  • sketchbook (hardback A4 or A3)

  • several sheets of white cartridge paper; cut to size eg A3/ A2

  • mid toned paper suitable for pastels eg a sugar paper

  • graphite pencil (soft eg 2 b or 4 b)

  • plastic rubber

  • charcoal sticks – eg willow and a hard compressed or conte

  • range of chalk pastels for example soft neutral yellow/ off white, I dark blue, 1 light blue, 1 white, 1 brown, 1 red

  • rags or kitchen roll

  • hairspray or fixative

  • range of brushes (suggest pointed / round shaped hog hair for oil and acrylic eg size 10, 8, 4, 2 but also softer brushes can also be used)

  • water pot or jam jar

  • palettes; for oil a wooden palette or a disposable palette

  • for acrylic a plastic palette with deep wells or several jam jar lids, or a heavy porcelain plate

  • oil paints and/or acrylic paints in following colours

  • 2 blues eg ultramarine blue and pthalo blue or cyan / coeruleum

  • 1 earth colour eg raw umber or burnt sienna, white, yellow eg cadmium or other red eg crimson or cadmium or other

  • black ink / dip pen

  • palette knife

  • painting surfaces – advice will be given about the suitability of working on primed one sided card, canvas and mdf board

  • mediums and solvents if working with oil paint

  • solvent or safe alternative eg turpentine or zest it

  • linseed oil

  • mediums and solvents if working with acrylic paint

  • retarder or slow drying medium

  • water

Content of Course

Each session, students will be introduced to various aspects in relation to the course. The sessions will explore a combination of contextual references and feature practical exercises and demonstrations, which include:

1. Working on location and with varying subject matter.

2. Exploring aspects of movement and light, dealing with changing weather and lighting conditions.

3. Exploring developing drawing and painting studies directly, in real time.

4. Explore working with a range of materials and painting media.

5. Utilise the sketchbook to make preliminary studies and thumbnail sketches consider formats and compositions.

Teaching method(s)

This course will be based and delivered on location and will typically include a range of practical exercises and introductions to techniques, processes and concepts. This is supported by practical demonstrations, group discussions, contextual references and one-to-one support.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Develop a series of works that demonstrate a response to a changing environment.

  • Demonstrate an awareness for making a series of direct observations from one location.

  • Demonstrate a range of drawing and painting approaches to capture a sense of movement and light.
