The starting point and theme of each class will be an exploration of the drawing material itself rather than the choice of subject matter. The first class will explore the use of hard and soft pencils, linear variation, cross hatching, directional lines, stippling and other mark making to produce a variety of dazzling effects. In the subsequent classes, students will embark on a thorough and in-depth process of experimentation with each drawing material featured, including combining pencil, charcoal, pastel and ink.
No previous art and design experience required.

Over the class sessions the course will cover:
1. Pencil - using a range of pencils, from hard to soft.
Students will begin by focusing on linear work-creating a network of lines varying in weight and tone before moving on to cross hatching, directional and stippled marks.
2. Charcoal.
Using willow and compressed charcoal sticks plus charcoal pencil with putty rubber, students will work tonally to create striking monochrome drawings. Students will experiment with techniques such as 'lifting out' emerging drawings from the black grain of the charcoal and adding water to the mix to create soupy grey mid tones.
3. Pastel-chalk and oil. A blaze of colour!
Student will learn how to rub down and mix chalk pastels on the paper to blend colour and manipulate oil pastels using white spirit. They will also experiment with different coloured papers and surfaces.
4. Ink.
Students will use pen and ink, brush and ink, twig and ink and ink washes. We will look at works such as Van Gogh's reed pen drawings to Chinese brush and ink paintings for inspiration.
5. Using all of the above to create mixed media works.
This course will be based and delivered in specialist art and design studios or workshops and will typically include a range of practical exercises, introductions to techniques, processes and concepts, and set projects which lead to more focused and personal exploration. Each week, students’ progress will be monitored and supported by the tutor who will suggest follow up reading, research and practice to undertake each week to support their studies. Teaching will include practical demonstrations, one to one tuition, group discussions and critiques.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
Demonstrate a considered use of typical drawing materials such as pencil, charcoal, pastels and inks;
Explore and combine materials and techniques which show a developed understand of their potential as a drawing media;
Create a series of exploratory tests and samples which demonstrate a range of drawing techniques from a variety of source materials.
