Course Summary

This course introduces students and artists to the moving image, interested in developing creative ideas through video. The focus will be on the fundamentals of the moving image and time-based media, together with digital video editing.  The course will explore developing concepts for moving image work using storyboarding, capturing and importing video, creating a rough-cut edit, fine-tuning the edit, working with effects and transitions, working with sound, and exporting a short video piece.

Special Information

Materials you will need to bring to the first class:

  • Basic drawing / writing materials,

  • Memory stick / external hard drive, 8gb minimum,

  • Headphones.

In addition to the course fee, students are expected to provide the following list of indicative tools, materials and equipment:

  • Smartphone / digital or SLR camera for filming and appropriate cables to connect to mac.

  • Basic drawing / writing materials,

  • Optional: lightweight tripod,

  • Headphones.

Content of Course

Over the class sessions the course will cover:

1. Introduction to planning and storyboarding for Moving Image.

2. Introduction and overview of Final Cut Pro X. Importing or capturing video footage

3. Basic Timeline Editing in Final Cut Pro X. Introductory editing concepts and techniques.

4. Working with Effects and Transitions in Final Cut Pro X. Introduction to working with a Moving Image journal or logbook.

5. Further Effects, Titles and the Motion Window in Final Cut Pro X.

6. Working with Sound, approaches to recording Sound, Audio, Editing and Effects.

7. Distorting Time. Time Lapse, Slow Motion and Reversing Time.

8. Further editing tools and techniques for fine tuning the edit.

9. Exporting, File Format Choices, Compression and Codec Issues.

10. Producing a final 2-5 minute short film.

Teaching method(s)

This course will be based and delivered in specialist art studios or workshops and will typically include a range of practical exercises, introductions to techniques, processes and concepts, and set projects which lead to more focused and personal exploration. Each week, students’ progress will be monitored and supported by the tutor who will negotiate and agree a ‘directed study plan’ for work to be undertaken out with the class hours each week. This will include researching a range of suggested artists or designers and their associated movements to engender a contextual awareness of the discipline being taught as well as how to annotate and evidence this within a sketchbook and practical outcomes. Teaching will include practical demonstrations, one to one tuition, group discussions and critiques.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a contextual awareness and the critical thinking through a reflective visual moving-image journal to support the planning and development of a project.

  • Show a confidence in shooting, importing and editing video footage and applying appropriate digital video editing effects, transitions and sound.

  • Evidence appropriate judgement to document, select, edit, produce and present a 2-5 minute video, supported by draft versions.

Studying for Credit

If you choose to study for credit you will need to allocate significant time outwith classes for coursework and assessment preparation. Credit points gained from this course can count towards the Certificate of Higher Education.
